Inner Growth - Not External Affluence

Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha
Mere external, material prosperity does not have the intrinsic strength to sustain a civilization for long. The inner, invisible treasure of the supramaterial mind, intelligence and heart is what makes a society really healthy and prosperous. Only when the inner constituents remain strong and cohesive as an integral unit, you can employ the biological body well.
If (i) the mind is unable to bring out benevolent and sustainable thoughts, feelings and emotions, and (ii) the intelligence fails to generate the desired rational introspection to access the Knowledge Treasure and impart the right guidance to the mind, the whole bodily personality will fail in its role and crumble miserably.
The coordination within the biological aggregate called the body – like assimilating, absorbing and transforming food into blood, reaching the nutrition from the blood and the air to all its parts, including the brain – is taken up by Nature, without anyone's will or choice. But the healthy integrated functioning of the senses, mind and intelligence, with the necessary infusion from the Soul, is something we have to consciously culture and ensure.
Alas, people or their leaders in general, do not recognize this inner need and the danger sure to result if it is not heeded and fulfilled well.
People think that external sensory affluence and delights are the sole objective of human life. But is it verily so? Humans have to think of the societal sustainability - not alone for centuries, but even longer, as the Indian society represents. In fact, as Kathopanishad puts it, to enjoy sensory objects is to `corrode' the senses. Wherein then lies the real promotion for human life? This is when the rational human turns inward, and discovers the mind-intelligence enrichment, to find the inner enrichment as the fundamental and ultimate need of human life. Naturally, this finding triggers a persistent search for its source and the means to attain it. I wonder when and how the modern people will come to evaluate this truth and accept this inner need and its paramount place in human life.
Unless the craze for material prosperity is bridled by deeper assessments and persuasions of the mind and intelligence, a grave imbalance is sure to precipitate. This will lead to widespread misbehaviour in individuals, families and the societies alike. The demeanour will manifest in parents not trusting the children, children finding the parents not dependable or members of the society deceiving each other. All this will result in multifarious indiscipline and chaos, leading to widespread mental and moral disaster.
