Mind is the most decisive factor in us. It gives us the touch and feel of Consciousness, which animates and activates the body.
Lord Shiva tells Sage Vasishtha [in Yogavaasishtha Ramayana] to use the power and process of the mind itself to probe into and gauge the magnitude and magnificence of Consciousness.
Mind is the one source that employs the body and its parts for their respective functions. In fact, the matter-energy body gets `biologized' only because of the mind. This mind is a functional note of Consciousness or sentience.
Intelligence is but a refined form of the mind itself – another functional note of the same Consciousness. Ego is yet another, which asserts itself, and also coordinates centrally all sensory and bodily functions and findings.
You can probe into the mind only by generating the thought process. Through the process of thinking, the seeker should aim at delving into Consciousness itself. Do not take the mind to be any separate entity by itself. It is like walking, a function of the legs. The same legs can jump, run, sit, squat, etc. Substance-wise there is only one entity, namely legs.
Function-wise there are many.
How does the mind do all these?
It has a store of experiences about perceptions, actions and their outcomes. In terms of measure, this will be quite substantial. It goes on increasing every day.
In terms of thoughts, feelings, memory, etc., the measure will be limitless. What more?
All sensory functions are activated by the mind alone. It is in the same mind that the sensory perceptions get imprinted. As has been explained earlier, the body is small in size. But it is within such a body that all gross objects are experienced. These include land, mountain, sea and a host of other things. Think for a moment whether all these can physically be inside your body! Mind alone produces its own subtle impressions, which are mental, not physical.
In fact, nothing from the seen or perceived world ever enters your body, as part of the perceiving process. Yet, are you not feeling the length or height, the width and thickness of each object clearly and precisely? Suppose you see someone walk to a mountain. His movement is simultaneously noticed by you, standing at a distance. When he climbs on the mountain, you will perceive the event. How is this enabled? You are where you are. Yet you precisely know the movement of the person and the exact time his feet touched the mountain.
This shows clearly that the mind is as wide, broad and expansive as the objects seen, nay, even more. The same mind alone gives you the direct experience of space around, which is endless.
Is it not creating such a measure in itself?
On this basis, does not the mind have an infinite magnitude?
Infinitude of the mind is, in fact, the infinitude of Consciousness itself. What more? Consciousness is far superior to the inert and insentient matter and energy. Sentience alone has the power to think, feel, ideate, create, as well as to do their opposites. The world evidences creativity everywhere.
Harih Om Tat Sat. Jai Guru.
